Skagway, Alaska


An interesting little town along the Inside Passage and a popular stop over with the cruise ships, Skagway survives on tourism. Steeped in the history of the famous Klondike Gold Rush, and seems to be a quaint town living in a time warp, so don't be surprised if you bump into a resident wearing 19th century clothes!

THINGS TO DO AND SEE

  • Skagway is where the historical Gold Rush took place, so be sure to visit the Historical Museum here to follow its trail.
  • Take a walking tour of the Historic District for a low down on the history of this area and on the Gold Rush.
  • Hikers can follow the trails to the alpine lakes in the region
  • Follow the Chilkoot Trail and relive the stampede of the Klondike Gold Rush
  • Take a unique dog-sledding and flight-seeing combo tour to get a different perspective on glaciers!

SHOP

There are little stores along main street that sell touristy souvenirs for you to take back home. Choose from artwork, needlework, jewelry and hand knit sweaters. And do buy a small gold nugget as a reminder of the quaintness of this little town.

GRAB A BITE

There are plenty of casual places to dine here. Sweet Tooth Cafe is for homely food and if you are looking for something a little more fancy then check out Olivia's at Skagway Inn.

The summer highs in Skagway are in the region of approximately 62F┬░/16 C; Skagway doesn't receive much rain in the year, but it is unpredictable so carry your wind cheater at all times.

The US dollar reigns. Credit cards are accepted everywhere and there are ATM machines for times when you need cash.
